10 Months

Posted on

The write-up of this post will be a little shorter than normal. Month 11 has been a heckuva month so far and pushed me a little behind on keeping up with these posts. From what I recall, month 10 was a pretty good month with continued growth and development of our little munchkin! Hopefully I can get it together a little better since, after this, we’ll only have one more post before our little one turns 1! So crazy!

Milestones

  • She has continued pulling up and tries to stay standing for as long as possible without holding on to anything. We might have a walker soon!
  • New foods this month include garlic cauliflower, chicken, and black beans.
  • First time at the beach during the Rahaman family vacation. She was definitely intrigued by the sand.
  • She got a new car seat this month, which I think helped her be a pretty good little traveler to and from the beach.

Not-so-great moments

  • As she has become more mobile, we have started getting incident reports from daycare. Nothing serious, but we never like to receive those calls!
  • Sleep has become a pretty big issue this month. We hoped she would get back into a rhythm like she used to be with the magic suit, but she just can’t seem to deal with all her new mobility.
  • Towards the end of the month, she finally caught the “black lung cough” (as Maricruz calls it) that has been going around with all her daycare buddies. Throw a little congestion in there too for some extra fun!

Yet another month has flown by, and our little munchkin is 3/4 of a year old! This month held some decent ups and downs, but overall Ruby is becoming more and more fun. It has been a blast to watch her personality develop in addition to all her skills. 🙂

Milestones

  • While it seems like more a game to her, she has started turning and grabbing the person who is holding her when it is time to be handed to someone else. Not a big deal, but it can hurt feelings! 😉
  • First plane rides! 4 in total going to and from Bristol. Slept through 2 and did great for the other 2, even when Delta destroyed our carefully crafted schedule
  • We have a crawler! She started pretty slow and methodically, but has really started taking off
  • While she just started crawling, she has already started pulling up on things. Geez Ruby, slow down a little!
  • This month she tried more new foods including eggplant and banana-spinach smoothie.

Not-so-great moments

  • First eye infection. While she didn’t seem too bothered, she looked so sad with super bloodshot eyes. Luckily the medicine seemed to clear it up fairly quickly
  • Started to become a bit of a fussy eater. She progressively has been fighting eating her veggies (but not her fruits of course) more and more. This has made for some pretty stressful meal times and has thrown some wrenches in our meal plans
  • Started what seems to be a sleep regression, though it has been (at least in part) probably tied to her new sleeping arrangement (she has gotten too big for her magic sleep suit so is now sleeping without any major sleep aids like it or swaddling)

This month was a little blurry because we got a little behind on last month’s post, but I don’t think it has encompassed anything too substantial. Here’s a small recap from the best of my memory.

Milestones

  • Continued to try new foods including carrot, peach, asparagus, and puffs (her first finger food)
  • We have been working on tummy time, and she is definitely showing signs that she wants to be more mobile
  • While she doesn’t seem to interested in her sippie cup anymore, she enjoys taking sips of water from regular cups
  • Went out to dinner with us for the first time and did great
  • A good amount of family time this month. We had visits from Tia Julie, Abuela, and BB and Grandaddy!

Not-so-great Moments

  • We had a bit of a regression on sleep for a couple of weeks where she was rarely sleeping for any substantial continuous time, but luckily it was fairly temporary
  • Some on-and-off tummy issues. It appears that Ruby may have inherited her dad’s weenie stomach so we’ve had to be conscious of making sure to balance the stop-you-up and get-things-moving foods

Ruby has started becoming more and more interactive, and she never ceases to be constantly inquisitive about what is going on around her. Here’s hoping her sleep doesn’t have too many more hiccups, but her awake time has definitely become more entertaining. Now to the fun part!

Yikes! Ruby is almost 8 months and we haven’t recapped month 7 yet!  While Justin has been awesome enough to keep up with writing the past few months’ happenings, I decided it was time for me to finally write another post! Things have been pretty hectic for me as of late. Everyone tells you how hard it is to be a working mom, but let me say, this hard? I had no idea. Between the sleepless nights and growing list of work assignments, I have had a pretty difficult time remaining sane.  But alas, enough about me, let’s get to the star of this blog, and of our hearts, Ruby-doo (a.k.a. the Rubester, Ruby-licious, Miss Ruby, etc…).

This little baby was very busy during month 7.  It is truly incredible to see her developments and how much her curiosity is peaked. We call her our “supervisor” since she looks very intently at anything we do, almost like she’s making sure we are doing it right.

Milestones:

  • Almost clapping her hands – I say almost because she bangs them together but keeps one in a fist the whole time. She does it pretty hard so it looks like she’s threatening to beat you up!
  • Can shimmy on her tummy backwards and around, always in search of new toys.
  • Month 7 brought much needed sleep to our house. Like a lot more. There were a few nights were she slept 10-10.5 hours without waking up. Crazy town! On average though, she woke up at least once a night, but still slept 9-10 hours overall.  That was my favorite part about month 7.
  • She mastered sitting up on her own.  She loves to sit and play with her toys. It’s still her her favorite thing to do.
  • She tried a splash pool and real pool. Loved both.
  • She’s still trying more solid foods. She tried peas, squash, apple, zucchini, and banana during this month.
  • Hosted/attended her first happy hour.

Not so great moments:

  • She had a cold on and off for the better part of the month. We took her to the pediatrician and had her checked out. Apparently, when babies start daycare it’s not uncommon for them to have back-to-back colds or for their immune system to just be “dealing” with little things. Luckily, she had no other symptoms so it was just dealing with lots of congestion and snot.

So for the most part, everything is going well with our little butterball. We are amazed every day at how much we love her. It’s insane. As for mom and dad, well, we are also doing great. Since she’s started to sleep better, we are back to feeling like human beings again. We even hosted happy hour one night! We are also getting better at finding time to spend with each other. It’s not a lot of time, but 30 minutes here and there where it’s just the two of us. We talk, talk like we used to, about absolutely nothing and laugh at the ridiculousness of our conversations. The last two months have been the hardest so far (for me) in our baby journey, and I’m so grateful for the help we have received from family. Also, as hard as it got, I was always thankful that it was Justin beside me.  I really can’t imagine going through this journey with anyone else. <3

Now let’s recap this month in pictures! My favorite part!

It is hard to believe that Ruby is half a year old already! In some senses, time is flying by, but on the other hand, it seems like forever ago that she was just a tiny little baby. This month has been us really trying to get back into the groove of us both working full time and coordinating schedules to make daycare go as smoothly as possible. In general, life seems to be settling down a little, but I’m sure something else will change soon enough to keep us on our toes 🙂

Milestones

  • Have been introducing more solid foods. We have been going kinda slowly because, while her mouth enjoys them, it doesn’t seem to take much to make her little tummy a bit unhappy
  • A Wii Fit weigh-in put her right at 19 lbs, though the pediatricians scale read about 18.5 lbs. Either way she is a growing girl!
  • Seems to have a blast at daycare and always seems excited when we drop her off to play with her friends
  • Can sit up by herself for the most part. She’ll still have the occasional topple but has been doing really well

Not-so-great moments

  • Sleep is still the #1 issue we grapple with. There is so much going on at daycare that she rarely naps more than 30 minutes at a time, which can’t be helping her night sleeping
  • She still wakes up at least 2-5 times a night, though she has recently started re-soothing herself sometimes, which has been awesome

And now for some pictures! And for a special treat this post, I put together a video as well 🙂

5 Months

It is hard to believe that our little munchkin is already 5 months old! Things have definitely been running a little more smoothly this month and our little butterball seems to get rounder every day! A lot of big things have been happening and Mom and Dad are definitely happier with things. Not just surviving this month!

Milestones

  • Our little one is steadfastly approaching 18 lbs!
  • She still giggles plenty and we really can’t get enough of it
  • She has gotten much better about being put to sleep both for naps and at night
  • Ate her first solid foods and took to them fairly well
  • We moved her into her room and have been sleeping in the guest room across the hall. It’s been nice to have our own room again!
  • She has discovered her feet and loves to play with them (and stick them in her mouth) at every opportunity
  • She is as inquisitive as ever and is always wide-eyed and taking everything in

Not-so-great moments

  • While she has been improving, she rarely slept for more than 2.5 – 3 hours in a stretch at night this month

As we have been trying to figure out a daycare schedule and trying to be more productive at work, we have had less time to set up our little monthly photo shoot.  It was about nap time, so she was a little grumpy, but you can still see how big our munchkin is getting!

Our chubby little 5 month old!

All in all, this has been a much better month. While we would still love it if she consistently slept longer stretches at night, things are definitely getting easier. Month 6 will include starting daycare, so I’m sure that will keep things interesting as well!

4 Months

Posted on

We’ve made it through 4 months, and boy was month 4 really a survival month. Following our trip to Bristol, Ruby’s sleep schedule was completely discombobulated and remained so for the better part of three weeks.  Nothing like going back to waking up every 2.5-3 hours to make us really wish we had fully appreciated when she was sleeping 6-7 hours! Luckily, things have settled down, and with no travel plans in the near future, she is starting to get back on a semblance of a schedule. What a whirlwind of a month it has felt like!

Milestones

  • Great hand awareness and better control. She is constantly reaching for things and getting more dextrous every day
  • 4 month checkup went well. She was in the 75th percentile in height, 80th in weight, and 90th in head size. Growing girl!
  • Our “little” one now weighs over 16 pounds!
  • Has become even more inquisitive and is constantly wide-eyed and taking everything in
  • Giggles quite often (and we can’t get enough!)
  • Survived another road trip to Miami and was much better about sleeping on the road (yay for making better time!). We were smart and split the drive this time.
  • Continues to improve at tummy time and has become quite adept at rolling from her belly to her back (double-edged sword, elaboration below)

Not so great moments

  • Sleep reverting back to only 2-3 hours at a time (we’re on the mend from this)
  • She is right at that tricky point where she seems pretty unenthused with the swaddle, but without it her hands just play with each other, her pacifier, and her face until she wakes up
  • While she is much happier to start tummy time, she readily flips to her back fairly quickly. This means it has become more and more difficult to get her to actually get comfortable on her belly because she doesn’t spend much time there!

As I said, this month has been more of a survival month, but we are on our way back on track! Our little baby is becoming more and more like a little person, and sometimes it is hard to believe that it has been 4 months already! Solid foods and day care are on the horizon, so here’s hoping she continues to get on a more regular schedule so her parents are ready to tackle the next set of challenges! 🙂

Another month with our busy little girl! She hasn’t slowed down one little bit and has kept doing a pretty good job of keeping us on our toes! We get a little more rest here and there, but we are still pretty beat most of the time. 🙂

Milestones

  • Smiles at us even more and has even started giggling a little bit
  • Tummy time is still improving, and she stays with it longer and longer
  • Still plays with her hands a lot and grabs things, but she still hasn’t quite figured out that she has full control of them
  • Went on her second road trip and was greatly improved over the first
  • Stayed in her first hotel room
  • Still sleeping well at night (6-7 hours, then another 2-3)
  • Weighs over 13 pounds (which we feel more and more as we soothe her to sleep!)
  • Saw her first snow
  • Becoming even more aware of her surroundings and is always looking around and taking everything in
  • Getting better about hanging out and being happy without us actively doing something to entertain her

Not so great moments

  • Still only has 2 volumes, quiet and screaming. Will often use the latter to let us know there is pee in her diaper or that she wants just a tiny bit more milk
  • She fights naps pretty hard. Some days go fairly well, others we are lucky if she has a nap that lasts 45 minutes, especially later in the day
  • Snafu with Maricruz’s work made us think that we might have to put her in daycare way earlier than expected. Still going to be a little more difficult than we thought, but it is looking like we’ll still be able to keep her to ourselves until 6 months

This past month has definitely been one where we have really seen our daughter grow and start to be more interactive with the world. We’ve been able to start having more fun with her, and as you will see from the many pictures that follow, she has been quite the busy girl! 😉

Baby Monitor Review – Dropcam HD

I wrote a post a while back about the beginnings of my research for baby monitors so I figured I would follow up with my decision and a review of how it is working so far. I only posted about a couple options initially, but I continued to do my research and was constantly amazed by how expensive some of these monitors can be! Especially those that had any kind of internet connectivity, which is something I wanted since both grandmas are far away.

As you can guess from the title, I eventually settled on the Dropcam HD. For only $150, it had all the features I figured we would want including night vision, audio, and internet accessibility. It was pretty simple to set up as all I had to do was create an account with Dropcam and tell the camera which wireless network to use. After that, I could log in via computer, iPhone, iPad, Android phone, etc. and view our camera! Right now we only use it to monitor her while she naps, so we haven’t done the full setup with the Grandmas yet, but we will probably do that once she is sleeping in a more consistent place, like her crib. Here’s my basic breakdown review.

Pros

  • Good quality video and audio feed
  • Ability to digital zoom on one of 5 sections so camera placement is pretty lenient
  • Cost – I saw pretty simplistic monitors without many features that were as or more expensive
  • Dropcam offers a DVR service where you can record and also get notifications of events like movement. Not really necessary for the baby monitor, but means it could easily double as a pretty good security camera
  • Ability to talk back – From an app or the website, I can talk and it will play from the cameras speaker. I don’t think it is enough to help settle a waking infant, but it could definitely be a handy feature depending on your usage
  • Internet connectivity means access from just about anywhere

Cons

  •  The last pro is also a bit of a con. It is SOLELY internet connected, which has caused some issues with us. If the internet gets spotty, the feed can easily cut out a good amount which can be extremely frustrating, especially since it always seems to happen at the exact moment she starts seeming restless
  • Night vision – It is great if you can place the camera near the baby, but since it relies on the built-in infrared light, subjects that are not right in front of the camera still remain pretty dark. On the auto setting, it also switches to night vision a little early so there have been times where we could actually see better without it. Luckily, you can manage whether it is on or off from anywhere you are viewing the camera
  • Zoom changes are enacted for all viewers. If I am viewing the cam on my computer and MC is watching on an iPad, my view changes if she decides to zoom in on a section. Since it is just a digital zoom, I don’t see why each viewer couldn’t manage it individually
  • The mount is a little finicky. The round cam fits snuggly in the hole of the metal mount, but there are no clips, snaps, etc. to really hold it in place so you tend to have to do some cable placement finagling to get the cam to stay exactly where you would like it
  • The only way to turn the camera off it to unplug it. It fits fairly snugly, so this can be a bit annoying. I ended up taking the wireless remote AC cord that we had been using for the Christmas tree lights and plugged the camera into that so we can easily turn it on and off with a little remote.

Overall

So far it has still been a really good monitor, and we have enjoyed having it. It would be really nice if we could connect to the camera directly. Our internet is usually pretty good, but I am not the hugest fan of the idea that our baby monitor would become useless if our internet were to go out.

The other minor thing I would like to see is a “guest access” feature. You can allow other users to access your camera, but from what I have read they then have as much control as you do. They could change any settings and do things like talk back through the cam just like we can. It would be nice to give a limited access so someone could view without having full control.

Overall, I am definitely happy with it, and we get a lot for the money. The minor gripes I do have could possibly be remedied with software updates (or possibly hacking in the case of intercepting and decrypting the stream) so there is at least hope that they can be fixed in the future.

2 Months

Posted on

Whew! It’s been a busy two months! Our little one is thriving beautifully, and we’re both completely exhausted!  Here’s a quick recap of the last month:

Milestones:

  • recognizes our voices and smiles at the sound of them (HUGE deal for her parents)
  • has pretty good head and neck control
  • most improved at tummy time-ing
  • can track objects
  • can hold objects but has no idea she’s holding them
  • found her other hand and they’ve both found her mouth
  • went on her first road trip
  • met the rest of her family and lots of friends
  • most of the time sleeps 6-7 hours at night (HUGE deal for her parents)
  • weighs over 12 pounds
  • great review at her 2-month check-up
  • has started to speak “baby” (so much fun for us to hear the sweet sounds she makes)

Not so great moments:

  • caught her first cold (complete nightmare for us)
  • 2-month vaccines (so sad, but necessary)
  • only naps for 30-45 minutes at a time
  • has had some hair loss (Dad has capitalized on this with very goofy hairstyles)

It was great being in Miami for two weeks and having help from Abuela.  We were even able to go out a couple of times on our own. That was nice.

Now for a boat load of pictures!

You guys aren’t done yet? And what’s up with this bow? (I love how she wiggles her toes. She’s just like her dad.)

Here she is with her great grandmother, Francisca (my mom’s mom):

Here’s Ruby doing tummy time. She’s not a big fan, but she’s starting to get the hang of it. We’ve even gotten a few smiles while she’s doing it.

Love this little face!

Other than her not really napping during the day, I can’t complain.  Nursing is going great.  Ruby and I are getting a walk in almost every day.  I’ve been slowly getting back into exercising.  I can see my toes.  Justin remains a dedicated father.  We continue to get a lot of encouragement and support from family and friends.  I’m still on maternity leave.  Ruby smiles a lot.

We still have some rough moments here and there, but for the most part, we’re a happy (and very very tired) little family.  Here’s hoping the good times continue. =)
