The blog fell into a bit of disrepair as Ruby got older and life got crazier, but I am determined to at least try to do the monthly posts! I don’t want the little guy looking back and feeling left out 😉 We are already behind with the non-documentation of the pregnancy, so here’s hoping I can keep this up!
This little one appeared to be following in his sister’s footsteps and didn’t appear interested to make his appearance out here. At 40 weeks on the dot we got him motivated and finally got to meet our little one! Arlo Julian Fincher was born at 8:51 AM, October 20, 2016. He was 6 lbs 6 oz and 19.75 inches long. A little guy! (at least in comparison to his sister). He marked what is hopefully one of the last big changes of 2016, and we’ve loved getting to know the little guy.

Welcome to the world Arlo!
The hospital suite was pretty nice, so we didn’t get home at the same detriment that we were at with Ruby. First couple nights were still a bit rough, but we are getting into the swing of things. We already are in love with our little addition, and we can’t wait to see the fun we have as a little family of 4!
It’s been a busy holiday/travel season, and I am going to use that as my excuse for not making any posts since our little munchkin turned 1 over 2 months ago. 😉 We have had a lot of fun galavanting all over with Ruby, and she has been a wonderful traveler. Sleeping in new places isn’t her forte (especially when she gets sick like she did over Christmas), but she does great in transit. After our last trip, she was pretty close to averaging 1 flight per month of life. Needless to say, I don’t think we can maintain those kinds of numbers, haha. We are definitely glad to have a little travel hiatus and just plenty of time to hang out with our adorable, growing girl! Now for pics!

I can’t promise that we will be much better about posting while we are home for a while, but we shall see how things go 🙂
It is so crazy that our little Rubydoo is already one year old! In some ways the year has flown by, but somehow, it has also been the longest year of our lives (probably something to do with being awake for more of it than any other year ;-)). It has been so much fun to watch our daughter grow into the little person she now is. We’ve had our share of ups and downs, but I think we are finally getting into a better groove, and while still hectic, life seems to be running a little more smoothly. Now to recap the last month!
We definitely have a walker. It was not long after figuring it out that she has really taken to it and wants to walk all the time, even if she doesn’t necessarily have somewhere to go.
Ruby has been doing a good job of getting the hang of wearing shoes while walking around
She has gotten especially excited when we let her walk outside. She’s always loved being outside, and I think she’s especially intrigued by the ability to now explore the great wide world on her own (with much supervision of course, haha)
We have all remained a little healthier this month. With daycare always comes on-and-off sniffles, but nothing too major this month.
Sleep has gotten a lot better. She is never ready to stop the fun, so we still get a little fussing at bedtime, but for the most part, she’s been doing very well.
She’s been babbling more and more and has really taken to pointing at things of interest.
We’ve been working on using utensils, and she is starting to get the hang of her spoon (i.e. every 10th try she gets a piece of food in her mouth, haha)
She touched her first frog! (a milestone I’m sure her mom loves, haha)
We have been dealing with lots of teething this month (finally!). While we thought she was teething earlier, we are finally actually seeing some teeth break through! She’s going to need them with all the food she has been eating. 🙂
We decided to try egg a little early, and Ruby wasn’t quite ready for it. Within minutes, she had broken out in itchy hives all over. Luckily, it started clearing up fairly quickly and wasn’t bad enough to cause any wheezing or breathing problems, but it was still a bit of a scary moment. It was sad too because she really seemed to love them!
Combining the teething with another cold has lead to a bit of a regression in sleep on the cusp of her birthday, but we’re still chugging along.
I couldn’t really decide if I wanted to do a full year recap or just a 12 month post, so I think it will be a little bit of a blend. For the most part, it will be the last month, but I’ve extended her 6 month video to a year (so get ready because it is kinda long!) and recapped her monthly photos to really see the progression. 🙂

And now the video! It is on the longer side (~16 minutes), but it includes most of our favorite clips from our first year with our munchkin! I added a little background music (all songs with “Ruby” in the title of course), and if you want to just watch the last 6 months, you can jump to about 7:00.
And before her official 1 year photo (which has become quite the production, haha), here’s a little recap! 🙂
1 Year Old!
And we made it! There were times that I wasn’t sure that we would keep up with our monthly posts, but we actually held it together. 🙂 After this, we’ll probably post a little more randomly (event-driven instead of time-driven), but we will definitely try to make sure we never let it go too long without some kind of update. Still hard to believe that we no longer have an infant!
What a hectic month 11 has been! This post will be a little shorter on pics than usual, but the reason will soon become apparent 🙂
Lots more finger foods! She is really enjoying feeding herself and has started to become less and less interested in purees
Some of her favorite finger foods include chicken, black beans, watermelon, and peas
We pretty much have a walker! She has been taking more and more steps on her own and gets so excited when she actually covers some ground
She’s also started communicating and mimicking more. She knows the sign for “more” (which she uses often during mealtimes), holds her hand (or whatever she is holding) to her head when she see’s someone on the phone or hears it ring, and has gotten better at waving goodbye.
After hitting a low with regard to sleep (as I’ll describe in a second), we have finally started to get things back on track and her sleep has definitely improved
I think I caught the cough/congestion that Ruby had and, since me getting it was soon followed by about 3 nights of really terrible sleep, it really got a hold of me and I was sick for the better part of about 2.5 weeks
Ruby’s sleep got worse to the point where she was waking up and needing soothing about every 2 hours. Especially not good when sometimes the resoothes could take 1-2 hours. This pushed us to finally look into some sleep training
As if sleep training wasn’t enough, her cough and congestion turned into her first ear infection
Not long after I recovered and was able to fully help Maricruz again, she managed to contract Strep throat.
In addition to all that, we are finally seeing some changes in Ruby’s gums that look like some teeth are imminent. The fun just didn’t want to stop this month!
While this has been a really hard month with everything going on, it has still been awesome to watch the munchkin spend more and more time on her feet. She’s really starting to be a little person! Hopefully things will continue to be a little smoother sailing, and I’ll be able to put together a nice big post to celebrate a year. I can’t believe we almost have a 1 year old!

The write-up of this post will be a little shorter than normal. Month 11 has been a heckuva month so far and pushed me a little behind on keeping up with these posts. From what I recall, month 10 was a pretty good month with continued growth and development of our little munchkin! Hopefully I can get it together a little better since, after this, we’ll only have one more post before our little one turns 1! So crazy!
She has continued pulling up and tries to stay standing for as long as possible without holding on to anything. We might have a walker soon!
New foods this month include garlic cauliflower, chicken, and black beans.
First time at the beach during the Rahaman family vacation. She was definitely intrigued by the sand.
She got a new car seat this month, which I think helped her be a pretty good little traveler to and from the beach.
As she has become more mobile, we have started getting incident reports from daycare. Nothing serious, but we never like to receive those calls!
Sleep has become a pretty big issue this month. We hoped she would get back into a rhythm like she used to be with the magic suit, but she just can’t seem to deal with all her new mobility.
Towards the end of the month, she finally caught the “black lung cough” (as Maricruz calls it) that has been going around with all her daycare buddies. Throw a little congestion in there too for some extra fun!
Trying to work on using the spoon herself (with little success haha)

Yet another month has flown by, and our little munchkin is 3/4 of a year old! This month held some decent ups and downs, but overall Ruby is becoming more and more fun. It has been a blast to watch her personality develop in addition to all her skills. 🙂
While it seems like more a game to her, she has started turning and grabbing the person who is holding her when it is time to be handed to someone else. Not a big deal, but it can hurt feelings! 😉
First plane rides! 4 in total going to and from Bristol. Slept through 2 and did great for the other 2, even when Delta destroyed our carefully crafted schedule
We have a crawler! She started pretty slow and methodically, but has really started taking off
While she just started crawling, she has already started pulling up on things. Geez Ruby, slow down a little!
This month she tried more new foods including eggplant and banana-spinach smoothie.
First eye infection. While she didn’t seem too bothered, she looked so sad with super bloodshot eyes. Luckily the medicine seemed to clear it up fairly quickly
Started to become a bit of a fussy eater. She progressively has been fighting eating her veggies (but not her fruits of course) more and more. This has made for some pretty stressful meal times and has thrown some wrenches in our meal plans
Started what seems to be a sleep regression, though it has been (at least in part) probably tied to her new sleeping arrangement (she has gotten too big for her magic sleep suit so is now sleeping without any major sleep aids like it or swaddling)
Still quite the happy little baby

And her official 9 month photo! Since she is getting more mobile, it is more and more difficult to get these photos. Hopefully we can still hang in there and get some decent ones for 3 more months! 🙂
This month was a little blurry because we got a little behind on last month’s post, but I don’t think it has encompassed anything too substantial. Here’s a small recap from the best of my memory.
Continued to try new foods including carrot, peach, asparagus, and puffs (her first finger food)
We have been working on tummy time, and she is definitely showing signs that she wants to be more mobile
While she doesn’t seem to interested in her sippie cup anymore, she enjoys taking sips of water from regular cups
Went out to dinner with us for the first time and did great
A good amount of family time this month. We had visits from Tia Julie, Abuela, and BB and Grandaddy!
We had a bit of a regression on sleep for a couple of weeks where she was rarely sleeping for any substantial continuous time, but luckily it was fairly temporary
Some on-and-off tummy issues. It appears that Ruby may have inherited her dad’s weenie stomach so we’ve had to be conscious of making sure to balance the stop-you-up and get-things-moving foods
Ruby has started becoming more and more interactive, and she never ceases to be constantly inquisitive about what is going on around her. Here’s hoping her sleep doesn’t have too many more hiccups, but her awake time has definitely become more entertaining. Now to the fun part!

Yikes! Ruby is almost 8 months and we haven’t recapped month 7 yet! While Justin has been awesome enough to keep up with writing the past few months’ happenings, I decided it was time for me to finally write another post! Things have been pretty hectic for me as of late. Everyone tells you how hard it is to be a working mom, but let me say, this hard? I had no idea. Between the sleepless nights and growing list of work assignments, I have had a pretty difficult time remaining sane. But alas, enough about me, let’s get to the star of this blog, and of our hearts, Ruby-doo (a.k.a. the Rubester, Ruby-licious, Miss Ruby, etc…).
This little baby was very busy during month 7. It is truly incredible to see her developments and how much her curiosity is peaked. We call her our “supervisor” since she looks very intently at anything we do, almost like she’s making sure we are doing it right.
Almost clapping her hands – I say almost because she bangs them together but keeps one in a fist the whole time. She does it pretty hard so it looks like she’s threatening to beat you up!
Can shimmy on her tummy backwards and around, always in search of new toys.
Month 7 brought much needed sleep to our house. Like a lot more. There were a few nights were she slept 10-10.5 hours without waking up. Crazy town! On average though, she woke up at least once a night, but still slept 9-10 hours overall. That was my favorite part about month 7.
She mastered sitting up on her own. She loves to sit and play with her toys. It’s still her her favorite thing to do.
She tried a splash pool and real pool. Loved both.
She’s still trying more solid foods. She tried peas, squash, apple, zucchini, and banana during this month.
Hosted/attended her first happy hour.
Not so great moments:
She had a cold on and off for the better part of the month. We took her to the pediatrician and had her checked out. Apparently, when babies start daycare it’s not uncommon for them to have back-to-back colds or for their immune system to just be “dealing” with little things. Luckily, she had no other symptoms so it was just dealing with lots of congestion and snot.
So for the most part, everything is going well with our little butterball. We are amazed every day at how much we love her. It’s insane. As for mom and dad, well, we are also doing great. Since she’s started to sleep better, we are back to feeling like human beings again. We even hosted happy hour one night! We are also getting better at finding time to spend with each other. It’s not a lot of time, but 30 minutes here and there where it’s just the two of us. We talk, talk like we used to, about absolutely nothing and laugh at the ridiculousness of our conversations. The last two months have been the hardest so far (for me) in our baby journey, and I’m so grateful for the help we have received from family. Also, as hard as it got, I was always thankful that it was Justin beside me. I really can’t imagine going through this journey with anyone else. <3
Now let’s recap this month in pictures! My favorite part!
Hanging out having a good time!
Hanging out before bath time.
Reading with Dad. Apparently there was something very shocking in her book.

Second try at peas was much more successful.
Yay! Sippy cup!
After one of our lunch time nursing sessions. She looks like she ate too much, hee hee.
It is hard to believe that Ruby is half a year old already! In some senses, time is flying by, but on the other hand, it seems like forever ago that she was just a tiny little baby. This month has been us really trying to get back into the groove of us both working full time and coordinating schedules to make daycare go as smoothly as possible. In general, life seems to be settling down a little, but I’m sure something else will change soon enough to keep us on our toes 🙂
Have been introducing more solid foods. We have been going kinda slowly because, while her mouth enjoys them, it doesn’t seem to take much to make her little tummy a bit unhappy
A Wii Fit weigh-in put her right at 19 lbs, though the pediatricians scale read about 18.5 lbs. Either way she is a growing girl!
Seems to have a blast at daycare and always seems excited when we drop her off to play with her friends
Can sit up by herself for the most part. She’ll still have the occasional topple but has been doing really well
Sleep is still the #1 issue we grapple with. There is so much going on at daycare that she rarely naps more than 30 minutes at a time, which can’t be helping her night sleeping
She still wakes up at least 2-5 times a night, though she has recently started re-soothing herself sometimes, which has been awesome
And now for some pictures! And for a special treat this post, I put together a video as well 🙂
Hanging out on the couch with Dad
Always so nosey! “What’re you doing with your phone, huh?”
With a little support, she’s been standing pretty well!
The jumparoo has become one of her favorite hangouts

Such a cute little munchkin!
With all the fancy toys she has, one of her favorites is still her little plastic rings (and the straps on the Bumbo, haha)
Eating some sweet potato
Learning to sew with Abuela
Ruby’s first work of art!
Even when enjoying new yummy foods like avocado, she can’t take her eye off the camera
All dolled up on the day she turned 6 months old
And now the video! Posting lots of random videos of kids doing fairly mundane things can get a little old, so I wanted to wait until I could compile some of them. So I put together this video with clips from birth to 6 months of our little Ruby Maria!
Here’s the official 6 month photo. She’s definitely a growing little girl!
It is hard to believe that our little munchkin is already 5 months old! Things have definitely been running a little more smoothly this month and our little butterball seems to get rounder every day! A lot of big things have been happening and Mom and Dad are definitely happier with things. Not just surviving this month!
Our little one is steadfastly approaching 18 lbs!
She still giggles plenty and we really can’t get enough of it
She has gotten much better about being put to sleep both for naps and at night
Ate her first solid foods and took to them fairly well
We moved her into her room and have been sleeping in the guest room across the hall. It’s been nice to have our own room again!
She has discovered her feet and loves to play with them (and stick them in her mouth) at every opportunity
She is as inquisitive as ever and is always wide-eyed and taking everything in
While she has been improving, she rarely slept for more than 2.5 – 3 hours in a stretch at night this month
And now for fun pictures!
Low light phone pics can create some interesting effects

Starting to get the hang of it!
As we have been trying to figure out a daycare schedule and trying to be more productive at work, we have had less time to set up our little monthly photo shoot. It was about nap time, so she was a little grumpy, but you can still see how big our munchkin is getting!
Our chubby little 5 month old!
All in all, this has been a much better month. While we would still love it if she consistently slept longer stretches at night, things are definitely getting easier. Month 6 will include starting daycare, so I’m sure that will keep things interesting as well!
